Once home to Caneel Bay resort, closed since it was destroyed during hurricane Irma, its beautiful beach and calm, crystal clear waters are accessible by boat for some great snorkeling.
Nestled at Caneel Bay, this picture perfect, palm fringed beach boasts a colorful coral reef perfect for snorkeling. The patch reef on the west side of the beach, between Honeymoon and Salomon beach, offers some very good snorkeling. Much of the reef is in fairly shallow water – making it an excellent choice to see fish, corals, turtles and rays up close! The soft sandy beach is decorated with shady coconut palms creating a secluded, romantic setting for couples.
The number one recommended St John beach to see sea turtles and rays that feed in the sea grasses just off the beach. Snorkelers and swimmers will find pelicans, young tarpon, rays and schools of bait fish that travel up and down the waters edge.
St John Island’s most visited beach, the most photographed beach and voted one of the top ten beaches in the world you’ll find plenty of beautiful white sand beach with towering coconut palms, aqua blue water and terrific snorkeling. Most notably, Trunk Bay has its own self-guided 2000 ft underwater snorkeling trail.
Salomon Bay beach is one of the best beaches on St John. With beautiful sugar white sand, aqua water and an off-the-beaten-path location. The white sandy beach is quiet, relaxing and once a best-kept-secret among residents and frequent visitors accessed by boat or one mile hike. The patch reef that separates Salomon beach and Honeymoon beach has some of the best snorkeling on St John. You’ll see a wide variety of colorful fish and corals in shallow water
Hawksnest Bay is a beautiful, usually quiet bay accessible by boat with soft sand beach, a dramatic shoreline and photo opportunities.
Leinster Bay home to Waterlemon Cay, one of the best snorkeling spots to see schools of fish, rays, turtles, star fish, conch and beautiful hard and soft coral reef formations.
Snorkeling along the eastern side of Lameshur there’s a nice mix of shallow and deeper water structure with sightings of octopus, rays, barracuda, tangs, parrot fish, Caribbean lobsters, coral banded shrimp and Queen Angelfish.
Reef Bay is home to one of the most famous hiking trails on Saint John, the Reef Bay Trail. The Reef Bay beach is only accessible by hiking or boat. Reef Bay is known for its historical Danish Plantation Ruins, a historic sugar factory near the beach, that was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1981. As well as the iconic Petroglyphs carved in the rocks by the preColumbian Taino Tribe around 900-1500 AD and continue to hold mysteries of their origins today. The beach is very isolated on the South Shore in the VI National Park and is another natural wonder lined with mangroves and scrubs.
In the mood for some shopping? Cruz Bay has many wonderful shops and restaurants along the wharf and surrounding streets. Don’t miss Mongoose Junction– with its beautiful Caribbean architecture – houses a cluster of wonderful shops, restaurants and businesses.

Christmas Cove has a nice reef, usually very calm waters and a beautiful view of the sunset. Home to Pizza Pi, a floating restaurant sail boat, making it a great place to stop for lunch or a snack anytime of the day.
Little St James has a great reef just off its northwestcorner and is only accessible by boat.
Water Island has the beautiful Honeymoon beach. A white sandy beach, Dingy’s Beach Bar for a great afternoon lunch and the turquoise waters of Elephant Bay.
Charlotte Amalie Harbor provides a great opportunity for a scenic waterfront tour of the main town of St Thomas, its colonial buildings and architecture, and beautiful views around Hassle Island and Water Island.
Magens Bay Rated one of the Top 10 Beaches in the World! Magens Bay is on many of “the worlds most beautiful” lists. It is well protected and has white sand beach that stretches over nearly 3/4 of a mile. Legend has it that Sir Francis Drake used Magens Bay as an anchorage while waiting for ships to plunder.
Secret Harbor is a small, beautiful beach. Nestled in a quiet, protected bay, the water is usually very calm; perfect for swimming. Snorkeling is good along the rocky coastline on the right side. A floating raft anchored in the middle of the bay is great for laying on and catching some rays. Home to the Secret Harbor Resort. A great restaurant and nice beach bar are available. This is a perfect beach for snorkeling, swimming, having lunch, a few drinks and relaxing!
Norman Island, the inspiration for Robert Lewis Stevenson’s novel, Treasure Island, has a documented history of pirate booty being stowed upon the island. Home to the Willy T, named after William Thornton, a British-American physician, inventor, and architect, who is most renowned for his architectural contribution as the first Architect of the Capitol in the United States. This legendary Caribbean bar rides afloat a rather convincing pirate ship and the best way to reach it is by your own vessel, like the pirates and sailors of old. Also home to The Pirates Bight Restaurant where you will find great food, great drinks and a beautiful atmosphere.
Known for tales of buried treasure, these caves are appreciated even more for spectacular snorkeling adventures, with thousands of orange cup coral and red sponge covering the cave walls.
The Baths at Virgin Gorda is a natural wonder, featuring boulders and caverns that make up a maze that leads to secret rock pools and the famous Cathedral Room, a natural pool inside a small cave. At the end, reward yourself with a relaxing time on the beautiful beach at Devil’s Bay, or some swimming and snorkeling. You can also take in the stunning view from the Top of the Baths restaurant.
Jost Van Dyke is home to White Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Virgin Islands, south facing with its powder white sand, the Soggy Dollar Bar and the original pain killer cocktail.
